A survey was recently undertaken among 1.000 Swedes. They were asked about the trendiest and most popular foods of 2020. Livsmedelsföretagen commissioned the study. This is the Swedish Food Industry Federation.
Björn Hellman, Livsmedelsföretagen's director, says: “There were far more varied answers than in other years. From kimchi, poké bowls, and many kinds of bread to breakfast cereals, energy drinks, and all kinds of cabbage. It has to do, I think, with us being at home more and trying different flavors and products. Plus, we adapted our food and drinks more to our own tastes."
Despite this variation, products that ranked high in other years were also often mentioned. These include alcohol-free beer, vegetarian alternatives, salmon, and meat.
Potatoes most popular
In 2019, kale took top honors as the Food of the Year. In 2020, potatoes received this title.
Jimmy Sandell, communications director at Livsmedelsföretagen, says, “The diverse potato is a good, old friend. You can use it in many different ways and dishes. In 2020, home cooking and more traditional meals were boosted. These often include potatoes. It seems to be a stalwart in troubled times. So, potatoes winning is perhaps not so surprising."
The study also showed a rising interest in cooking, bread baking, and farming. Swedes are far more aware of good food and beverages than ever before, concludes Hellman.
