Recently temperatures in major potato producing areas including Shandong, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia dropped sharply. Shandong, especially, encountered the lowest temperatures seen in recent years, with the lowest temperature approaching -20°C. In addition, the Hebei region is currently facing a new Cover-19 outbreak. As highways are closed, cargo transportation is hindered to some extent. In addition, shipments are affected by the low temperatures, and growers’ enthusiasm for selling is not high.
The trading situation in various production areas follows the market trend, and the enthusiasm in purchasing has not been high. As the volume of shipments has not increased significantly, the market has been lukewarm. Due to cold weather, there are not many active buyers and traders in Inner Mongolia, and the volume of purchase has decreased compared with before. The overall transaction volume in Hebei is limited. Due to smaller demand, the interest for purchasing has weakened. These two usually active production areas have been having a quiet market for two weeks, the volume of goods has been reduced, and there is still no obvious sign of recovery.
There are many factors that are affecting the the potato market; by and large hindering rather than beneficial. Sellers are in general willing to sell, but the current supply is large and the distributing in the end market is slow, so potatoes are still mainly traded in small volumes. There is still a big difference in the shipment volume compared with the same period of previous years, and the price has not shown any significant signs of rising.
