"Chinese market for imported ready-to-eat avocados is growing every year"

Chinese market demand for avocados is growing every year. This 'super food' is becoming increasingly popular with Chinese consumers. More and more countries have obtained permission to export avocados to China and the variety of imported avocados is becoming more diverse too.

This is the height of the avocado craze in China. Mr. Avocado, a Chinese avocado supplier specialized in imported avocados, kicks off the 'national promotional tour' for the 2021 avocado season with a ceremony in Kunming City, Yunnan. Ms. Liu Mosu, spokesperson for Mr. Avocado, recently talked about the current condition of the Chinese market for imported avocados.

We raise awareness of ready-to-eat avocados among Chinese consumers
"The production of domestic avocados is not yet fully realized on an industrial scale, because there are still problems when it comes to seedlings and plantation technology. Yunnan is currently the most suitable area for avocado plantation in China. Here we improve and localize avocado plantation technology. We hope the average Chinese consumer will soon be able to eat domestic avocados from Yunnan. Although the avocado industry has its eyes on Yunnan, the local consumers are not even aware of the ready-to-eat avocado. As the leading company in the Chinese avocado industry, we are working hard to realize the potential for avocado plantation in Yunnan, while we simultaneously do our best to raise awareness among Chinese consumers. That is why we decided to begin our 2021 'national promotional tour' in Kunming, Yunnan."

In addition to this promotional activity in Kunming, Mr. Avocado also placed advertisements in public transport, on tv, and in local magazines. On top of that, the company arranged for promotional stands in major supermarket chains where customers can see fresh avocado being prepared and taste the fresh flavor of ready-to-eat avocados from Yunnan. "We hope that these activities will introduce ready-to-eat avocados into the Yunnan kitchen and make consumers in Yunnan more aware of the possibilities of ready-to-eat avocados," said Ms. Liu.

Our own ripening center helps to guarantee product quality
The Chinese market for avocados has quickly developed in the last few years and a growing number of Chinese consumers are familiar with imported avocados. Market demand is growing every year, but the Chinese avocado industry is struggling to improve the customer experience.

"We constantly hear feedback from consumers who say that if they leave the avocado for a few days, either the avocado is still not ripe, or the avocado is already spoiled and showing black spots. After careful examination we discovered that the problem is with importers who do not guarantee refrigerated distribution along every step of the supply chain. Traditional wholesale markets do not have the facilities to keep the avocados refrigerated and fruit shops do not have the knowledge for proper management of avocados. Improving post-harvest management technologies is key to the solution for these problems in the avocado market," explained Ms. Liu.

"We have constructed our own avocado ripening center in Kunshan to solve this problem. We introduced the latest ripening technology from North America for our center so that we can control the ripening process of our imported avocados. Only then can we guarantee that customers can eat the avocados they buy as soon as they get home. Only then can we guarantee that every ready-to-eat avocado is soft and smooth, and give the consumer the perfect experience."

We import a variety of avocados from around the world to provide Chinese consumers with a stable all-year-round supply
"A few years ago we only sold our imported avocados in first-tier cities, but now the demand in second- and third-tier cities is rapidly growing. Our own company alone sold nearly 65% more avocados in 2020 than the year before," said Ms. Liu. "The Chinese avocado market has huge potential, which is why avocado supplying countries are competing to obtain permission to export avocados to the Chinese market. The establishment of Mr. Avocado does not just facilitate avocado import, but also performs an important function in product quality control."

The avocados imported by Mr. Avocado mainly come from Mexico, Peru, and Chile. And the company also received the first container of avocados from Colombia. "We are also in negotiation with California and South Africa to start importing their avocados. There is no doubt that the Chinese market will feature an increasingly diverse array of avocados from production areas across the globe. And we hope to play a vital role in the introduction of avocados from around the world to consumers in China. We hope to enrich the consumer experience and guarantee a steady supply of top-quality ready-to-eat Mr. Avocado avocados throughout the year."
