Price of Chinese blood oranges declines by around 20% this year

China is one of the largest orange suppliers in the world. Production areas are distributed across the country and they produce a wide variety of oranges. Improvements in agricultural technology in recent years as well as a growing awareness of innovative plantation management have produced an increasing richness of orange varieties in recent years. One of the orange varieties that stands out in this crowded market is the blood orange. This orange variety is grown in many parts of China in large volumes, but the main production areas are in Sichuan and Guangxi.

"Our oranges come from Yangmei Town in Maoming, Guangdong. We own an orchard that covers a surface area of 67 hectares. We mainly produce and sell blood oranges. Under regular weather conditions the production season begins in late October and the supply season continues until the last week of January. The flavor of our blood oranges is somewhat better than around this time last year. The sugar content is quite high." This is according to Mr. Liang Feilong of Yuechisha Fruit.

The price of blood oranges declined by 20% in comparison with last year. The main reasons for this development are the excellent weather conditions, which stimulated the overall production volume. In addition, many trees enter their most productive years, and this further expanded the production volume. And while the outbreak of Covid-19 in China is largely brought under control, the general market condition is still not great.

According to Mr. Liang Feilong, "we sell our own blood oranges under our own brand 'Yuechisha blood oranges' through traditional retail channels. We mainly sell our blood oranges in wholesale markets and supermarkets in first- and second-tier cities throughout China. As for packaging, we mainly sell 5-kg bags as well as small premium boxes. The price is quite stable this year and distribution is relatively smooth."

The Yuechisha blood orange obtained recognition as grade A green fruit, an award bestowed by the Green Food Development Center of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture.
