This year, great volumes of fresh chanterelles and porcini mushrooms are available for the holidays. "Even though, or especially in a year when consumers can not visit restaurants and short-term Christmas shopping is not possible, they want to treat themselves to something good in terms of food," says a spokesperson from Bavarian company Uwe Niklas.
As specialties, chanterelles & porcini mushrooms are particularly in demand during the holidays. "And this year we are lucky. Quality chanterelles from the USA and porcini mushrooms from South Africa are available in good volumes. In recent years, certainly when it came to porcini mushrooms, there was a growth stop, smack in the middle of the Christmas period, because the weather in the countries of origin did not play nice."

Mushrooms are extremely popular at Christmas, say the experienced people at Uwe Niklas. "Fresh cultivated mushrooms, such as king trumpet mushrooms and shii-take mushrooms are often integrated into the festive meals. It is the same with dried mushrooms, which are very well received as an ingredient or gift."
