2021 has been designated by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV). Freshfel Europe is encouraging the EU fruit and vegetable community and beyond to support this important international year. The 2021 IYFV is a unique opportunity for the sector to boost consumption and raise awareness of the sector’s constant work to improve the health of all citizens and increase global sustainability.

As designated by the UN General Assembly, 2021 is the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. This important international year is a unique opportunity to celebrate across the EU and on a global scale the role and importance of the fruit and vegetable sector. Freshfel Europe invites the EU fruit and vegetable community and beyond to support the 2021 IYFV to boost fruit and vegetable consumption and raise awareness of the sector’s constant work to improve the health of all citizens and increase global sustainability.

Freshfel Europe thanks the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in leading the celebrations of the 2021 IYFV in collaboration with other organizations and bodies. Concrete initiatives on all scales, local, regional and national, are imperative to raising awareness and direct policy attention to the nutrition and health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption as part of a healthy, sustainable diet. Freshfel Europe is calling on its members to proactively engage in the 2021 IYFV to maximize the outreach of this exceptional yearlong initiative.

Following the launch of the 2021 IYFV by FAO this afternoon, Freshfel Europe General Delegate Philippe Binard affirmed that, “The 2021 IYFV is a milestone in global acknowledgement of the important role of the fruit and vegetable sector and the necessity to stimulate fresh produce consumption, which in the EU is currently below the WHO daily recommended of 400g per day.”

Mr Binard explained that, “Freshfel Europe will be supporting FAO in celebrating the IYFV 2021 by launching a digital campaign in January targeted at EU decision-makers to better support the sector in EU policy-making. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought health to the forefront of consumers’ minds and we are encouraging all our members to take action during 2021 to highlight the importance of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy, nutritious, sustainable and
delicious diet.”
