After a year since its introduction, the Azovian F1 large-caliber plum tomato from Nunhems®, a brand of BASF's horticultural seed business, has successfully managed to find its place among the main producers and marketers thanks to its perfect balance between flavor and large size (around 140 grams, on average). “Our customers really like it and, in fact, whoever tries it comes back for more,” says Iván Sierra, BASF's Tomato Sales Specialist.
From field to homes. The Azovian F1 is a plum tomato for the domestic market that meets the expectations of all links in the value chain. For the grower, it is a productive variety that is also less labor-intensive, which helps save costs and increase yields. “There is a high share of M-G calibers, so handling times are shorter,” says Sierra. Furthermore, its resistance to the yellow leaf curl and spotted wilt viruses and to nematodes gives peace of mind to the producer.
For the marketer or importer, the Azovian F1 is a tomato with a regular size and shape throughout the cycle. This facilitates a good preservation, which is key to reaching the markets.
Also, this large caliber plum tomato has all the necessary qualities to meet the demands of the end consumer. "The Azovian F1 is a tomato with a good red color, firm and, above all, tasty," says Sierra.
All these characteristics have driven the growth of the Azovian F1 in the province of Almería, but not only there. “We are obtaining very good results on the coast of Granada and Malaga,” says the BASF Tomato Sales Specialist, who adds that they have also entered the Region of Murcia this campaign.
The Azovian F1 has a very wide transplant window, from August to April, and adapts well to both short and long growing cycles. "It sets well in the heat and performs well in low temperatures," says Sierra, who highlights the versatility of this plum tomato variety, which has come to stay.
