The positive weather conditions in Chile suggest that the 2020-2021 fruit season will be positive in terms of volume and quality, stated Francisco Ulloa, Maersk's director for South America's west coast. "There have been significant increases in the cherry and stone season. According to estimates, they have grown by more than 10% over the previous year, something that should also happen to grapes and pineapples," he said.
The United States continues to be the main destination for the country's fruit, Ulloa stated. "This is especially important for the grape, blueberry, avocado, citrus, and apple segments. The state of Philadelphia is the main destination on the east coast of the United States," he added. “Asia is the second most important destination, mainly thanks to the 2020-2021 cherry season, as this market receives almost 100% of our cherry volume, i.e. approximately 12,000 FFE. We currently have all the reefer units we need in Chile to face and comply with this cherry campaign,” he stressed. "Northern Europe and the Mediterranean rank third with a mixture of products, such as grapes, blueberries, apples, and avocados mainly," the director stated.
“Maersk, as a logistics integrator, offers a complete package of services to facilitate exports, incorporating innovative concepts in the industry,” Mr. Ulloa stated. Regarding transport rates, which according to different reports from international consultants have shown a recent increase, Ulloa said that it was difficult to talk about a particular rate. "Our pricing strategy will be defined by the balance between supply and demand, the quality of service, and the products of added value,” he added.
He also spoke about the actions that Maersk will take regarding the new sanitary requirements imposed in China to maintain control of the logistics chain. "One of the measures we are taking is at the level of the definition of the Container Warehouse Protocols to ensure that the units are properly sanitized and cleaned and that the clients have the clarity and the corresponding certificates that indicate that we are complying with the standards required by the industry. This has been coordinated with the different exporters, to ensure that the measures taken meet their requirements,” he stated.
