"Our 'sugar potato' sweet potatoes are produced in the Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture in Yunnan. This year the production season began on the 16th of November. That is 2-3 weeks later than last year. This delay is the result of a sudden drop in temperature and excessive rainfall. We expect our supply season to last until Chinese Spring Festival [12 February, 2021]. The price is currently on the same level as last year. Market demand exceeds supply. The Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture is located in the southeast of Yunnan province. The soil is rich and fertile with relatively few plant diseases and insect pests. And the UV-light is quite strong there. Furthermore, the temperature differences between day and night are huge, which helps to create the perfect growing conditions for sweet potatoes. The unique natural conditions stimulate the accumulation of sugar in sweet potatoes from this area.

When asked about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sweet potato industry, Mr. Hao replied, "the outbreak of Covid-19 certainly had an impact on domestic consumption levels, but I think the impact was mostly felt in luxury industries and in physical stores, rather than online stores. The consumption of agricultural products continued without much impact. If the Covid-19 situation in China does not suddenly worsen, then the sales conditions and distribution networks will not suffer much either. The production volume of sweet potatoes declined this year because of weather conditions. That is why our supply volume is smaller than usual."

Honghe Qinyunzhishang Agricultural Development buys sweet potatoes via online and offline sales channels. Offline channels include wholesale markets, and online channels include WeChat shops. Mr. Hao explained that "our 'sugar potato' sweet potatoes are sold in wholesale markets and supermarkets in first- and second-tier cities throughout China, and exported to Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar as well as Europe and the USA."
