The damage caused by Eta in Honduras boosts the price of a box of Ecuadorian bananas above $7

The impact of storm Eta on the Honduran banana production as it passed through the country in early November, where it is estimated it affected some 10,000 hectares of crops, has boosted the price of a box of bananas in the region.

In Ecuador, the price of the box increased to $7 and even reached 7.30 dollars, i.e. a dollar above the $6.30 established for 2020. However, according to calculations by the export sector, the lack of product could raise that value to 8 and 8.5 dollars next week.

"The economic impact of Eta in Honduras is already visible: banana crops, which are the main source of income for many people, have been severely affected. This threatens the livelihoods of many communities in the country," the International Red Cross told EFE news agency.

According to estimates, Honduras has lost about 35 million boxes of bananas, which will considerably reduce their supply at a time that was becoming complicated for the sector, as European supermarkets, such as Aldi, had proposed lowering the price they pay for the product.
