Fruit and Vegetable retailer recognised as one of Australia's leading social media voices in 2020

A Melbourne fruit and vegetable retailer has been selected as one of LinkedIn's Top 20 Australian Voices in 2020, in recognition of driving the conversation around a changing industry.

David Zahlan, Director of Alexanders’ Fruit Market has amassed over 10,000 followers on his LinkedIn, in addition to 7,000 likes on Facebook, and has seen a total reach of over seven million views since the beginning of 2020.

“It’s all about three things: fruit, family, and fun,” Mr Zahlan said. “It’s not about doing things the right way, but just having a go. Looking at new ways to connect with customers and create a welcoming atmosphere.”

Alexanders’ Fruit Market, a growing fruit and vegetable market in Oakleigh located in Melbourne’s South-East has attracted attention due to his novel approach to social media and marketing.

The Top Voices lists highlight professionals in a variety of industries and regions who are building communities and starting thoughtful conversations on LinkedIn through their articles, posts, videos and comments. Mr Zahlan's recognition comes alongside a Fire and Rescue Commissioner, a wellbeing professional, and a beauty founder, to name a few.

According to the official website, LinkedIn used a combination of quantitative and qualitative signals to compile the list, including engagement (reactions, comments and shares across each member’s content); posting cadence; and follower growth. The other filter is qualitative; LinkedIn News editors refined and curated the list by looking at an eligible member’s body of work to determine if the contributions were insightful, conversational and timely, or give and help as opposed to being self-promotional.

All sharing activity measured took place over a 12-month period, from October 1, 2019, through September 30 2020. One reason Mr Zahlan was chosen was because of his ability to sharing “slice of life” moments, insights into the industry, and connecting with colourful characters around the shop. He has since become a thought leader on the fruit and veg industry and is consulted for expert comment by FreshPlaza.
