Extreme weather in China heating up green onion prices

Around the National Day, green onion prices on the market were less than 2 yuan per half a kilo. Now, they have risen to more than 3 yuan. Green onion may be a common vegetable, but it is important for seasoning. Prices have skyrocketed this time - in some regional retail markets, prices doubled in just a few days.

Data from the Wanbang Agricultural Products Wholesale Market show that the average price in Shandong in September was 1.46 yuan per half a kilo. By October, the average price reached 1.72 yuan. Compared with the price of 0.77 yuan in the same period of last year, an average increase of over 200% was shown. Prices of this vegetable are currently rising all across China.

The increase in prices is a result of a few factors. Main production areas such as Shandong and Hebei were affected by heavy rains this year. On the one hand, they suffered damaged from the storms, on the other hand, the rainfall resulted in smaller production, which intensified the issue of insufficient supply. At the same time, considering the production season of different areas overlap with each other, prices are unlikely to fall.
