The Chinese market price of celery has been quite strong in recent weeks. The retail price of celery from production areas in Liaoning and Hebei is around 2.2-2.3 yuan [0.33-0.35 USD] per 0.5 kg, and around 2.5-2.6 yuan [0.38-0.39 USD] per 0.5 kg for celery from production areas in Xinyi, Jiangsu.
The price of celery always goes up when celery from production areas in Lanzhou leaves the market and celery from production areas in Jiangsu takes over, but this year the price increase is even more significant than in previous years. The overall surface area devoted to celery plantation in Lanzhou declined, and weather conditions in celery production areas in Jiangsu were not great this year. The overall supply volume was therefore rather low, which is why the price went up.
People in the industry say that the supply volumes from various production areas will gradually grow and that is when the price will come down. The wholesale price of celery is around 2-2.1 yuan [0.30-0.32 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is 0.2-0.5 yuan [0.03-0.08 USD] per 0.5 kg higher than around this time last year. Later in the season when celery from production areas in Xinyi and Xuzhou in Jiangsu, as well as Zhucheng in Shandong, enter the market in large volumes, and celery from production areas in Hainan enter the market too, then the price will certainly show a significant decline.
