Argentina's fresh fruit exports have grown by 6% in 2020

In the first ten months of the year, Argentine fresh fruit exports registered a 6% year-on-year increase totaling 797,220.7 tons. According to the country's Ministry of Agriculture, the European Union, Russia, and the United States were the main destinations for Argentina's fruit.

Argentina, the third-largest exporter of pears in the world, exported 321,278 tons of pears between January and October 2020, i.e. 11% more than in the previous year. The main destinations for this fruit were Brazil (91,794 t), Russia (85,071 t), the United States (38,294 t), and Italy (25,367 t).

In the same period, Argentina shipped 247,985 tons of lemons, i.e. 6% more than in the same period of last year. The main markets for the country's fresh lemon were Russia (57,932 t), the United States (33,536 t), the Netherlands (31,829 t), and Spain (25,171 t).

In that period, Argentina's National Agricultural Food Health and Quality Service (Senasa) certified exports of 98,446 tons of apples, 73,956 tons of oranges, 32,767 tons of mandarins, and other quantities of blueberries, grapes, kiwis, pomegranates, and cherries, among other fresh fruits.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina, Luis Basterra, said that the increase in shipments had been achieved thanks to the efforts made by hard-working Argentine producers and Senasa's tireless work in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Basterra said the Argentine health service had to "adapt its tasks and adjust controls to continue certifying agri-food and agro-industrial exports in the framework of the pandemic; which proves that public institutions can be strengthened in difficult times when there are appropriate public policies."

In the face of the pandemic, Senasa carries out inspections of fresh fruits in the country's cargo terminals and of wooden packaging in commercial export operations.
