Chinese onion prices rising considerably

Recently, the average price of onions in Wuhan Baishazhou Agricultural and Sideline Products Market rose from 1.43 yuan/kg to 1.68 yuan/kg, showing an increase of 17.48%. The main reason for this increase is that onions currently in the market come from Gansu, Shandong, Inner Mongolia, and other places outside the province. Now, the temperature has dropped significantly in the north; in fact, the temperature in Gansu and Inner Mongolia has dropped to zero degrees. Therefore, the main supply in the market is storage onions.

Industry insiders reveal that the planted area in the Jinxiang area of Shandong has decreased this year. The long-lasting rainy weather in July and August led part of the crop to rot in the fields, resulting in lower production. Part of the purchasers from Shandong rushed to Gansu and Inner Mongolia to purchase goods, which pumped up the purchase price of the origin and led to the recent increase in prices.
