During an online event last week, six companies from Yichang -Hubei province- signed agreements for the sale of 110,000 tons of citrus fruits and related products to foreign purchasers. Some 103 buyers from 27 countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, signed the deal at the 2020 Yichang International Citrus Online Trade Fair, on Wednesday.
Yichang is a major production center of citrus fruits in China, and has three geographical indication citrus fruits such as Zigui navel orange and other renowned citrus brands. The total output value of the citrus fruit industry in the city is about 14 billion yuan ($2.08 billion).
Participants at the fair included the representatives from embassies of Tajikistan, Nepal, Pakistan and Moldova, officials and association representatives from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, as well as companies from countries such as India and Belarus.
According to an article on english.eastday.com¸ in 2019, the city produced about 3.65 million tons of citrus fruits, exported 215,000 tons of fresh citrus fruits and 104,000 tons of processed fruit cans. Production this year is expected to reach about 3.69 million tons with more than 1 million local farmers growing citrus fruits as the major income source.
