Chiapas registers a decline in mango and banana production

According to a report from the Agri-food Information Service, in 2019 the southern Mexican state of Chiapas produced 696,877 tons of bananas, i.e. 0.15% fewer bananas than in 2018.

This year's production data indicates that the state has produced 539,156 tons of bananas in the first three quarters of 2020, which is almost 80% of what it produced last year, which means it might surpass the volume it obtained in the past two years.

In 2019, Chiapas led the national production of this fruit, followed by Tabasco with 488,608 tons and Veracruz with 257,297 tons. At the national level, Mexico has produced 1,911,704 tons of bananas so far this year.

In 2019 Chiapas' mango production fell by 3.91% over the previous year, totaling 268,374 tons.

In the first three quarters of 2020, the state has produced 270,695 tons of mango. This means that the state has already surpassed the total production obtained last year, but still needs to grow by 3% to reach the volume obtained in 2018.

At the national level, Chiapas ranks fourth in mango production. Guerrero is the leading producer with 375,915 tons, followed by Sinaloa with 308,856, and Nayarit with 296,904 tons.
