US: Meijer receives gold award for disability inclusion from state of Ohio
Meijer was recently named a Gold Level winner of the 2020 Employer Partners of Inclusion Awards in recognition of its ongoing commitment to providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The award is presented by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), a state agency that empowers Ohioans with disabilities through employment, disability determinations, and independence. OOD has recognized Meijer for its inclusive employment efforts each year since 2014 when the agency began recognizing employers with awards.

US: Instacart partners with Aldi on EBT SNAP delivery program
Online grocery delivery company Instacart is launching an Electronic Benefit Transfer and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (EBT SNAP) integration in partnership with Aldi, the Germany-based grocer known for its low prices and no-frills stores. For the first time, EBT SNAP participants will be able to access fresh food and pantry staples from Aldi via Instacart’s same-day delivery and pickup services. The multi-phased launch will begin in Georgia in the coming weeks across more than 60 Aldi stores, with anticipated plans to expand to more than 570 stores across Illinois, California, Florida and Pennsylvania in the coming months.

Amazon announces $100mln logistics investment in Mexico Inc said it has invested $100mln in opening new warehouses in Mexico, including its first shipping centers outside the populous capital area, in a bid to offer faster deliveries. The new sites include two so-called fulfillment centers - one near the northern city of Monterrey and another near the central city of Guadalajara - as well as a support building in the State of Mexico, just outside Mexico City. Amazon also opened 12 delivery stations, bringing its total to 27 across the country, it said.

Poland: Groszek rebrands with new logo
Polish franchise store chain Groszek, a subsidiary of Eurocash, has rebranded with a new logo and visual identity. The initiative also includes the renovation of store interiors as the chain celebrates its 20th anniversary. Groszek operates more than 1,920 branches across the country. Presently, two Groszek stores in Polichno and Józefów on the Vistula River have implemented the new logo and visual identity. The retailer has also implemented a new arrangement and additional lighting for specialised meat, vegetable and bakery stand.

Saudi tycoons expand fortune as grocery chain soars after IPO
The BinDawood family’s fortune soared after shares in their eponymous Saudi Arabian grocery business rose by 10% on their first day of trading. Members of the family own a 67% stake worth about $2.2bln in BinDawood Holding Co., according to Bloomberg calculations based on the IPO prospectus. They also raised about $500mln from the initial public offering.

Russia: Lenta sees sales up 4.6% in third quarter, as online sales surge
Russian retailer Lenta has posted a 4.6% increase in sales in the third quarter of its financial year, to RUB102bln (€1.12bln), saying it was 'continuing to adapt' to changing consumer behaviour. Like-for-like sales for the period were up 3.0%, with average basket size growing by 9.2% and traffic down by 5.7%. Online sales were up RUB1.3bln in the quarter, a massive 551% increase year-on-year.

Belgium: Delhaize launches meal delivery service
Delhaize launches a delivery service for freshly prepared dishes in collaboration with Tastyoo, a food technology start-up in which the supermarket chain is already the main shareholder. Colruyt Group has already launched a similar service, Rose Mary.

UK: Carrefour chooses Insider to deliver individualized supermarket experiences with AI
Carrefour, the globally renowned supermarket chain, partnered with Insider to drive immersive digital experiences for its customers worldwide. Insider will help the brand connect data from multiple online and offline sources, predict the future behavior of their customers with AI and individualize experiences across channels with precision.

China continues to dominate global e-commerce
Nearly 60% of all online sales worldwide are made by just 6 large companies. 4 of these are based in China. This is shown in a new report from Activate Consulting. Amazon is the largest non-Chinese e-commerce player. According to the study, Jeff Bezos' company generates around 13% of global online turnover. The only other Western company in the top 6 is eBay, which accounts for around 3%, writes Charged Retail. 42% of global online turnover is generated by 4 major Chinese platforms. Taobao and Tmall, both part of Alibaba Group, achieve 15% and 14% respectively, while and Pinduoduo represent 9% and 4% respectively. In total, the 6 largest e-commerce players realise 58% of all online turnover, or a sloppy 3.4tln dollar (2.88tln euros).

UK: Aldi opens 900th store amidst record investment
Aldi opened its 900th UK store in Sandhurst, Berkshire. The milestone follows Aldi’s pledge to invest £1.3bn within the UK over the next two years, including adding capacity to its store and distribution network to keep pace with demand from consumers. Aldi has also confirmed it will create around 4,000 jobs in the UK next year to support its continued store growth.

China: E-commerce platform Pinduoduo collaborates with national research center in smart agriculture
China’s e-commerce platform Pinduoduo signed a strategic cooperation agreement in smart agriculture with a national research institute. The agreement said the 2 parties will build a precision agricultural management system based on the Agricultural Internet of things, artificial intelligence, 5G and other advanced technologies.
