Violence hits Mexico’s agricultural sector

Sonora asparagus packhouse set on fire after refusing to pay a protection racket

The packaging warehouses of the 25 de Enero agricultural company, a major Sonoran company that is also known as La Coyotera and is dedicated to the production of asparagus, were set on fire in the morning of October 20. The fire caused losses amounting to several million pesos.

A convoy of armed men threatened the staff, set fire to the premises, and fled the facilities without being arrested. A few days ago, the company had refused to pay this illegal group a fee to continue working.

According to sources, two of the company’s employees were deprived of their freedom and authorities are already working in the area.
