Kompany has wanted to supply cucumbers to its clients year-round for some time now. This year will be the first time it'll succeed in that. "We'll be starting new cultivation within the collective within a few weeks. That enables us to guarantee year-round production of our own cucumbers," says the Dutch company's head of sales, Bern Verbeek.
Retail clients have been demanding year-round supply for a long time. "With a crop like this, the risks and costs are much higher than in summer. So, we need client guarantees. For now, we're starting this extra crop with one grower. But I certainly see further expansion opportunities for year-round supply in the future."
From week 48/49, Kompany will also have its first autumn TOVs available. "For years, several of our farmers have deliberately chosen vine tomatoes instead of a third cucumber crop," says Bern.
"With a 26ha area, the autumn vine tomato supply is comparable to last year. We carry these autumn TOVs under our Excellento brand. The season's forecast looks good. There are fewer tomatoes available, so we're optimistic about the season."
The cooperative got the 'Circulair Centrum Zuid' off the ground this year. This new development focuses on processing and adding value to its producers' green residual flows. "We collect and process green residual flows and plant and cultivation waste. Then we separate the juices from the foliage. The foliage lends itself well to composting. And the juices are of value in the farming soil. This brings with it the necessary challenges. However, the first season went according to plan. We were able to take the first step in the optimal processing of these residual flows. And so, complete the circle," concludes Bern.
