“A season of ups and downs - that's how to best describe the past summer," says Mr. Akarca of Elite Foods in Belgium. "It was generally a better year than last year. Low tomato prices made for high demand. So, we were able to sell good volumes."
According to Akarca, it's a little quieter at the moment. "Tomato prices have risen a bit. There are tomatoes on the market from Turkey, Morocco, and Macedonia too. These are being offered at low prices. But these tomatoes are of much lower quality. That's compared to Belgian and Dutch tomatoes. Quality-wise, they can't compete with our tomatoes. Unfortunately, price-wise, they can. But, we find it important to give our clients the best products."
“Besides tomatoes, we offer a diverse range of greenhouse vegetables too. Cucumbers, bell peppers, and lettuce are also popular with our clients. We were able to sell nice volumes of strawberries too. That was in the summer when prices weren't too high. Nevertheless, we continue to specialize in Belgian greenhouse vegetables. And we continue to work hard to offer great quality products," concludes the trader.
