Onion packers and exporters are currently working overtime. "We are being pulled from all sides. Colleagues are also sorting for us at the moment," says Maarten van Damme of Dacomex. It came as no surprise to him that it would be busy in exports. "The only question was when. But now that India has closed its borders, Asia is fully participating. That has resulted in this price increase."
"In particular, destinations around India such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are now in demand. A lot of red onions are currently going there and that goes well with the yellow onions that go to other destinations in Asia, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. The market is nicely in balance and we are experiencing good export weeks. We have to try to maintain that until the end of the year. The quality of the onions also looks good, apart from a messy batch of onion sets, but that is for the enthusiast. "
"The bale price has gone along nicely with the farmer's price and is now, on average for all sizes, around 22/23 cents. But we have to be careful that the price does not go up so far, that we are ignoring export destinations. At the moment all markets are coming to us easily, but we should not rest on our laurels," said the exporter.
"You can already see that the farmer is putting his heels in the sand. He also feels that there is a lot of demand and is currently busy with other products and is happy to leave his onions in the shed as long as the price rises. They want to take the highest price and I would if I were a farmer, but if the export falls a little bit everything can look very different again," says Maarten.
