Sebastian Samborski (Fruchthaus Hulsberg) on the current situation

"Gastronomy still suffering from Corona"

The Bremen wholesale market has shifted to its winter season. Among other things, regionally produced Brussels sprouts and kale are determining the current supply. But the Corona situation continues to give the traders a hard time, especially in the catering trade, reports Sebastian Samborski, sales manager at Fruchthaus Hulsberg.

Traditionally, the first German cabbages arrive at this time of year. "We have already been able to offer Brussels sprouts from regional cultivation for a few weeks. German kale has been supplementing the range since last week," Samborski says on the seasonal product range. The first batches of the season are usually traded at high prices, but prices will gradually drop until the main season in December.

"In the pre-Christmas season we also offer pre-cleaned Brussels sprouts and kale , so that our gastronomy customers have to do less work on the product," says Samborski. These processed cabbage products are usually well received by customers, but in times of Corona, much smaller volumes are needed in the catering industry.

The majority of Fruchthaus Hulsberg's clientele is to be found in the catering and large-scale consumption sectors, which is why it is inevitably struggling with the currrent sales drops. Samborski: "At the height of the crisis, we lost a great deal of sales, and in the months that followed, we were able to generate 80 to 90 percent of sales again. At the moment we are seeing another slump."

Nevertheless, the management of the Bremen company is also positive. "In spite of all protective and hygiene measures, the regular customers are visiting us again at the wholesale market. In my view, this part of the trade has returned to normal."
