Carabaya Province is a province of the Puno Region in the southern part of Peru. Producers of pineapple in its San Gabán district hope their produce will reach national and international markets, but they need support from the authorities to achieve that goal.
Pineapple growers have stated that they require the installation of processing plants and technical assistance to improve their productivity, and thus be able to export.
Grower Mauro Ramos stated that there are five main pineapple varieties that are produced in the region. The one with the greatest demand is the Hawaiian. What growers require are processing plants so that the fruit has an added value in order to reach the standards required by other countries.
“We require the support of the authorities to export and grow our crops,” he said in an interview. He added that they need to open roads to move their merchandise to the different supply centers in Puno.
In another part of the region, in the populated center of Amparani, there are strawberries, a crop never seen before in this area of the highlands. The producers who bet on the harvest of this fruit achieved important sales, but they also aspire to export.
