Fresh strawberries grown in Tibet delivered to MT Everest Base Camp

Until quite recently fresh vegetables were virtually unobtainable at any price in Shigatse, a 182,000 km2 prefecture-level city located in the Tsang province of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. Today, fresh vegetables and even fresh flowers, are available all year round, even in the depths of winter. These changes have helped to bring about a positive transformation in the lifestyle of ordinary Tibetan people.

Part of this transformation is the result of a pioneering and visionary project by Niangmai Poverty Alleviation Company Limited of Sangzhuzi District, Shigatse (Niangmai) together with Eisenberg Agri (Beijing) Company Limited (EAC) through the introduction of Israeli state-of-the-art controlled environment agri-technology.

EAC were responsible for the design, construction and operating of the farm covering a 42,000 sqm area with 80 EnviroDome Energy-Saving Greenhouse Systems©, which are suitable for growing in all weather conditions.

An international agronomist team from EAC will be stationed on the site and will be responsible for all the agricultural production and operations and the local farming community will be able to learn from the technology.

The EnviroDomes will enable the cultivation of high quality, long shelf life, toxin free fruit and vegetables to meet the specified standards of GlobalGAP and Kosher certification requirements enabling the produce to be exported to the major international markets.

"This highly significant initiative is China's first Sino-Israeli collaborative commercial project for large-scale fruit and vegetable cultivation in the Tibetan Plateau Region and represents a new model of innovation and cooperation between the two nations," the team with EACI states.
