Lockdown stimulated higher demand for domestic mushrooms

Upward trend in Swiss mushroom production

Swiss producers have been able to further increase the market share of Swiss mushrooms by the end of August compared to the previous year, said the Association of Swiss Mushroom Producers (VSP) in a press release. The slump in sales to the catering trade during the lockdown was largely compensated by a shift to the retail trade.

The border closures during the lockdown have led to a higher demand for domestically produced mushrooms, says the VSP. From January to August 2020, for example, 10% more fresh mushrooms, 13% more king trumpet mushrooms and 11% more shiitake mushrooms from Switzerland were sold as compared to the previous year.
