Canaries announces aid to PGI banana producers for the 2021 campaign

The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) published on Friday, October 9, a call to aid PGI banana producers of the Community Program to Support Agricultural Productions of the Canary Islands (POSEI) in the 2021 campaign.

This subsidy amounts to 141.1 million euro and is intended for banana producers in the Canary Islands that are registered at the Plátano de Canarias Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

The main goal is to help producers of PGI fresh bananas, except for hortaliza bananas, limited to a maximum production of 420,000 tons, corresponding to a total area of 11,200 hectares with an average yield of 37,500 kilograms per hectare.

The aid to banana producers includes a subsidy based on the assigned reference quantities and an aid supplement consisting of a payment per hectare for those producers who maintain the outdoor cultivation system, which is set at 1,200 euro per hectare a year, and up to a maximum of 7,600 hectares.
