Borettana onion arrives in the Netherlands

Exporting onions to the Netherlands is like exporting champagne to Paris, or beer to Germany for the Oktoberfest. Nevertheless, the Italian company Freddi manages to do it and even with a considerable degree of continuity. "We don't ship large quantities," said Matteo Freddi, "but small batches with a good frequency. The Dutch can find a different, special and high quality product in our Borettana onion."

In the Netherlands the Borettana onion is especially sought after by the Ho.Re.Ca sector. "They ask for a Class I product with 35-50 caliber. We provide small, homogeneous and regular deliveries. If these conditions are met, the price paid is good."

"The 2020 harvest was bigger than usual with an average of 40 tons/ha and of a very good quality. The weather did not cause any problems and the quality of the onions remains overall high in the vast majority of cases."

The shelf life of the onion is the most delicate aspect for entrepreneurs. In this regard, the company Freddi recently introduced the forced air system, which removes excess humidity from the product stored in the trays. "We continue to store our onions only in wood, while many other producers prefer plastic. However, we realized that the wood absorbs moisture from the product, and through forced ventilation we can reduce the humidity so that the product has a better shelf life," concluded Matteo.
