Yesterday, Fresh Produce Development Agency and Bismarck Maritime Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding to support and improve the distribution of fresh produce and vegetables. The MoU was signed between the two groups with other stakeholders in Lae.
It is the first partnership for FPDA with a shipping company to assist them in their work and the work of the farmers.
According to FPDA chief executive officer Mark Worinu it is an important partnership to assist farmers and to have consistency in supplying fresh produce and vegetables to the markets: "Bismark Maritime plays a critical role in transportation and ferrying of produce from mainland PNG to Port Moresby and this partnership is vital as it is also important to the role in which FPDA plays. “
Worinu added that the partnership will also help them to collect data on how much produce is transported, how much is coming in and going out, where the final market is, and how much is picked up for consumption and the wastage.
Bismark shipping managing director Hamish Sharp said the signing is a ground breaking initiative for the two parties: 'The partnership enables both entities to collectively work together to develop a strategy and implementation plan to improve the distribution of fresh produce and vegetables throughout PNG. This enables farmers wherever they are to get their produce to the market. We've got farms and this is a way forward to ensuring produces from the farms gets to the markets."
