Automatic fruit counting and citrus crop estimating

Plantai, Brazilian startup, is pleased to announce, for October 2020, the launch of the very first application of the market that estimates crop of citrus based on photos taken from a cell phone.

Elaborated with Artificial Intelligence and intensively tested in the field, its great objective is to give the entire citrus productive chain an extremely simple, cheap, fast and uncomplicated way to obtain a number of fruits existing in citrus tree and in an orchard ("fruit population").

The subjectivity, reliability, storage and analysis of information collected in the field have always been challenging elements in the entire history of citrus crop estimation in the world. Thus, with just one cell phone in hand and some photos of their orchards, small, medium and large producers will obtain a second number of the fruit population of their orchards in an objective and scientific way to better target their estimates.

Knowing the technological, infrastructural and cultural limitations, Plantai has created an application that does not need an Internet connection in the field for automatic counting and fruit estimation.

The producer can even simply take pictures with the native camera application of his cell phone and then open them in the Plantai app for counting and estimating. Very few photos are needed in a plot to automatically count the fruit and display the estimated results.

Adverse environments such as: high density planting, very big trees, little space between the planting rows, luminosity, time of the photo shoots, very green fruits equal to the leaves are not impeding the use of the Plantai.

Because of the ease and technology used, the grower will be able to follow the evolution of the number of fruits in his orchard from the stage where the fruit is still green ("ping-pong ball"), that is, before the beginning of ripening. Just photos of one side of the orange tree are enough!

Three consecutive harvests were used to validate the statistical model of the Plantai which took into account the variety, age and size of the fruits. As the variability between orchards of the same farm, regions and countries is high, it is possible to make specific changes by further adjusting the statistical model and its parameters to better reflect the local reality of the crop being estimated.

Yield map
The scientific literature provides several methods for citrus yield maps, but, as a rule, they are extremely expensive, time consuming, laborious and only performed once at the end of each harvest. This is not what happens with the Plantai method! You can make several yield maps at various times during a crop. Thus, you have several "radiographs" of the evolution of what is most valuable in your orchard: your fruit!

With a few photos the yield of the plot is estimated and with many photos the yield map is created. See the first yield map generated by the Plantai method:

Areas in red more fruits per tree, areas in blue less fruits per tree.
