Med Green Import is currently in full preparation for the Moroccan citrus season. “We will receive the first mandarins from Morocco in ten days,” says Iliass el Mrini. He expects slightly more mandarins than last year. "Agadir has slightly lower productions, but in Berkane and Beni Mellal productions are slightly higher than last year."
This year, the importer will also offer grapefruit from Morocco, from the north of the country, for the first time. "There are not many suppliers of Moroccan grapefruit, but we see a lot of potential in these sales."
"In addition, the citrus market is already good all year round. Everyone is looking for extra vitamin C because of the Corona virus," says Iliass. Outside of the Moroccan season, Med Green also wants to become more involved in the overseas citrus market. "Last year we already imported Valencia Late from Argentina and we want to expand the overseas package to serve our customers all year round."
"But Morocco will remain our showpiece, mainly with Salustianas and Maroc Late oranges and Berkane and Nadorcott mandarins. The Moroccan citrus distinguishes itself in taste, the juice content and, moreover, it is a bit cheaper than the Spanish citrus. So there will always be room for Moroccan citrus is on the market," says the importer. "We expect to continue to distinguish ourselves with this. The advantage is that Moroccan exporters are selective about where they send their citrus. It certainly isn't a case of sending it wherever these days."
The Moroccan vegetable season is also about to start again. "We import tomatoes, bell peppers, pointed peppers, courgettes and beans from Morocco. When we start, also depends on the situation in the Netherlands and on the local Moroccan market. Last year the Dutch tomatoes grown under lights were sold for all sorts of prices and then there is no point in importing," said Iliass.
Med Green Import has been around for four years now and Iliass is satisfied with the development the Bleiswijk-based company is experiencing. “We have customers all over Europe, ranging from supermarkets to wholesalers.
