After the Gala apples it’s now the time for Turkey to switch to different varieties. It’s expected that the Reds and Grannies will begin shortly. Prices are still unchanged and are still as high as they were six weeks ago.
Demand for the Turkish gala apples has been strong since the start of the season. Alper Kerim, owner of Turkish fruit exporter Demir Fresh Fruits, has high hopes for the next varieties that are coming up.
“We have started with Gala and it was going very well. Currently we’re in the midst of the red delicious and granny harvest. There was a high demand for Gala from starting because of the excellent quality. It’s our hope we’ll see the same kind of demand for our other varieties. We are starting to ship Reds and Grannies to Gulf countries now. Reds will also be in demand soon in India, as they usually start their orders in November.”
Due to an expected shortage late in the season, prices are still at a higher level than they were last year, Kerim explains: “At the moment demand is highest for Gala apples, but this can change with the arrival of Reds and Grannies. So far we’ve experienced a high demand all season, as the word of our good quality got out. We’re seeing our apples being transported all across the world. Two weeks ago, we sent our first Gala consignment to India, for example. Prices are still rather high due to a general shortage in Europe, but the prices have not changed since the end of August.”
According to Kerim the Polish are a worthy competitor for the apples from Turkey, as well as Italy. However both of these countries have their own set of issues to deal with this season: “The Polish apple is a major rival for the Turkish apple, however they are also experiencing a shortage this season. Luckily for them, it’s not such a disaster as it was last season. Word has also reached me that Italy is experiencing problems with their quality, so it could become a very interesting season for us indeed. We’ll have to see how the season progresses in the upcoming days.” He concludes.
