"We have such good quality at the moment and yet the trade is not really looking for it," says John Grootscholten of Daily Fresh Radish. "It is not really a huge surprise, because the demand is always a bit lower in September and October and now that the catering industry has problems again due to the Corona measures, things have not improved. That actually just hurts a bit. It all costs a large amount of money. The result is that the radish is great, but there is no trade to purchase it. Anyway, this is also entrepreneurship and it is just part of it."
"We steamed the entire garden again and ran through a mixture of coconut and garden peat to maintain a good structure in our soil. The soil has been well restored. It is bursting with nutrients and that is clearly visible in the quality. It is growing beautifully and well. We are having a great time in that respect, "says John. "We are now completely prepared for the coming winter and we are looking forward to it."
"We have such a monocultural crop with our radishes. Radishes are grown eight to nine times a year in the same soil, so we have to take very good care of our soil. If we want to grow and sell a good quality product all year round, then we have to do something for it and so we do. We have had a very hot dry summer, which we got through quite well. The only bump in the road was the heat wave with the warm nights in early August. This made the leaves a bit longer and the radishes a bit more uneven," says the radish grower.
"Now we have ended up in a different weather situation with a lot of rain and another challenge awaits; mildew. We aren't able to heat yet and we can't ventilate with rain either, so that will be a challenge. We are happy that there is a healthy and strong crop growing. All in all, on to the winter season and we hope, for everyone, that the catering industry can remain open and that everyone can continue to eat as many healthy radishes as possible! "
