Chinese lemon season begins in Tongnan, market prospects look good

Tongnan in Chongqing is one of China's three largest lemon production areas. The county is located on 30th parallel north and the annual average temperature is 17.9℃. The soil is slightly acidic and drains very well. These are excellent conditions for growing lemons. Tongnan county annually exports more than half of the Chinese export volume of lemons. Buyers across the world keep a close eye on the lemon industry in Tongnan. These lemons travel on the fast carriages of the China Express Railway across the "one belt, one road" to Germany, Russia, and nearly 30 other countries. Tongnan county is one of the three most important lemon production areas in the world.

"Our lemons come from our own orchard in Tongnan, Chongqing. The orchard covers an area of around 667 hectares. We mainly produce the internationally-acclaimed Eureka lemon variety. The production season begins every year in September and continues until August in the subsequent year. We can provide lemons all year round and they can be kept in storage for up to 11 months." This is according to Mr. Wang, Director of Sales at Huida Lemon Science and Technology Group.

When asked about the impact of poor weather conditions that frequently occurred throughout China this year, manager Wang replied, "We take advantage of the geographical location of Tongnan and the superior natural environment. The growth of our lemons has not suffered from poor weather conditions. Looking at the current situation, we predict that the lemon price will rise up to 40% in comparison with last year.

"There are several reasons for this development. First, the overall production volume is smaller this year. Second, the product quality is better than last year. Third, lemons are a citrus fruit and are therefore beneficial to the immune system, which is an important quality in fruit during the Covid-19 pandemic. That is why consumers are particularly interested in lemons this year."

In overseas markets, we mainly export to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, and Western Europe. Furthermore, we have invested in our online sales channels to better serve our customers during the pandemic. Only in this way can we guarantee that we satisfy our diverse customer group."
