Compensation to fruit growers in Spain amounts to almost 130 million Euro

According to Agroseguros, insurance compensation to fruit growers in Spain in 2020 amounts to 129.14 million Euro. The frosts in March and, above all, the hail storms in the spring have taken the greatest toll on the Spanish fruit production. The compensation for the latter stands at 89.31 million Euro. The entity has already paid out almost 75% of the total.

Four autonomous regions account for almost 86% of the compensation
Catalonia, the Region of Murcia, Aragon and Extremadura have been the most hit, with compensation exceeding 110 million Euro (85.7% of the national total).

The autonomous region of Catalonia has been the most affected, with compensation totaling 39.59 million Euro. Of these, more than 29 have been caused by hail in the spring and summer. Peaches (with almost 31 million) are the most affected crop.

The Region of Murcia has received around 30 million Euro in compensation, with around 50% being the result of hail storms. Apricots, peaches and nectarines are practically the only fruits affected

Aragon is the third autonomous region that has received the most compensation, with 21.83 million Euro; however, it is also the second most affected by hail storms, with 19.5 million Euro in compensation. Once again, peaches are the most hit by the storms.

In Extremadura, the total compensation amounts to more than 19.5 million Euro, with about 13 million attributable to hail storms. Peaches and plums are, in this case, the most affected fruits.

Insured production grows
According to the figures registered by Agroseguro during the first eight months of the year, the insured agricultural production has grown by 19.2% compared to 2019, and exceeds 29 million tons. At the same time, the insured capital has increased by 11.4%, reaching 10,550 million Euro, so the upward trend continues, with record figures having been reached over the last two campaigns. The protected agricultural area exceeds 4.5 million hectares, 48% more than in the previous year.
