Chinese Ruby green pomelos sold out before becoming available

With the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day approaching, pomelo, a fruit that symbolizes festivity and family reunion, has been flying off the shelves. Ruby green pomelo, a variety available on the market soon is also open for pre-orders. Compared with traditional local varieties such as white, red, and Sanhong honey pomelo, Ruby ​​green pomelos are sweet, tender, juicy, and thick in flesh with 85% edible content, making them very popular among higher-end consumers.

“We started planting in November 2018. Now, Gaoming Agriculture has more than 6000 mu of Ruby green pomelos. This year, part of the trees have started fruiting, and the production is about 10,000 pieces. Our retail reservation price is 168 yuan per piece.” Huang Chunying, E-Commerce Manager of Guangxi Gaoming Agricultural Group said that these products are not yet fully ripe but all have already been pre-ordered. Although the production is limited, as a tree that fruits only two years after planting, the volume is already considerable.

Whether the variety is good or not is ultimately up to the market to decide. When the Ruby ​​green pomelo started to bear fruit, the sales manager of Gaoming Agriculture predicted that the price would be around 100 yuan per piece this year. After the pre-orders were open, the price not only stabilized but also rose and all products were soon sold out.

Due to the scarcity of production and lower prices than the equivalent product imported from Thailand, Gaoming Agriculture’s crop this year can only be sold to regular customers who make pre-orders. It is expected that the product will be available for brick-and-mortar wholesale and e-commerce outlets after the production reaches a substantial volume next year. The main sales areas are Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and other first-tier cities. Ruby green pomelos are suitable for storage and transportation, so their shelf life is longer and their ability to resist market risks is greater, providing good conditions for their e-commerce and micro-commerce sales.
