Last Wednesday, an industrial park in Meixian County -in Shaanxi Province, northwest China- dispatched 40 tons of kiwifruit for export to Santiago, Chile. It is a first for China to export kiwis to South America.
Meixian County is one of the most suitable areas for growing kiwis, and is dubbed the "Hometown of Chinese Kiwifruit." So far, some 20,000 hectares of kiwifruit have been grown in the county. Its annual output value has exceeded 3 billion yuan (US$ 441 million) for the past five years.
China.org.cn reported on the province's Baoji customs saying it has strictly controlled the monitoring of orchard pests with a full-chain source tracing system and standardized packaging management in accordance with the necessary inspection and quarantine requirements for exports to Chile.
