According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development of the Junta de Andalucia, Andalusia will produce more than 2.3 million tons of citrus in the 2020-2021 campaign, i.e. 33.5% of the 6.9 million tons of citrus Spain is expected to produce in that campaign.
By provinces, the Junta de Andalucía expects Almeria will produce about 213,500 tons; Cadiz, 59,850 tons; Cordoba, nearly 378,000 tons; Granada, 11,700; Huelva, more than 578,100; Malaga, about 146,400; and Seville, almost 934,500 tons.
The Secretary-General of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food, Vicente Perez, presented on Tuesday, September 21, the citrus production forecast for the 2020-2021 campaign, highlighting that they expected to obtain fruits that have a high quality and great caliber. The representative of the Andalusian Government emphasized that producers shouldn't harvest fruits that haven't matured, and he announced that the Board was going to intensify the controls to avoid this practice.
The 2020-2021 citrus forecast prepared by the Andalusian Government also includes data related to the surface area. Nearly 85,200 hectares will be devoted to citrus production. 57,500 hectares of which are devoted to orange production, almost 20,000 hectares to mandarins, 6,540 hectares to lemons, and 1,145 hectares to other citrus fruits.
The production of sweet oranges in Andalusia stands out as they account for 72% of the region's citrus production (more than 1.6 million tons) and will increase by 5.5% when compared to the 2019-2020 campaign. They are followed by mandarins, which account for 22% (520,640 tons) and will increase by 12% over the previous season; and lemons, which are close to 109,600 tons (5%). The forecast also includes data for grapefruit (20,790 tons) and other citrus fruits (6,420 tons).
According to provisional data, Andalusia's orange production will account for 48.3% of the national total. Meanwhile, Andalusia's mandarin production would account for 22%, and its lemon production would account for 10.7% of the national total.
