Belgian Fruit Cooperative sells first Redlove apples

On Tuesday, 22 September, the Belgische Fruitveiling (BFV) sold the first of this year's Redlove apple crop. The Redlove is one of BFV's new apple varieties. It has a red peel and red flesh. This season, they estimate a 200,000kg production.

"The BFV is focusing attention on this apple variety. That's because of its innovative possibilities for the gastronomic and industry sectors. The Redlove apple brims with character. It has rich aromas and tastes fresh and tart. It's a refined stewing apple. And it opens great flavor and color pallets in the kitchen," says a spokesperson for this Belgian cooperative.

The Redlove is multi-functional. It can be used in appetizers, starters, main courses, and desserts. "This apple has a flame-red peel and flesh. So, it brings a decorative element to the plate. Certainly for autumn and winter menus and recipes. This apple's attractive red color makes it an innovative choice for aperitifs and juices too."

The BFV doesn't doubt this culinary apple will once again win its place on top chef's menus. As well as on those of this year's huge number of home chefs. What's more, these red apples contain 50 to 100mg anthocyanin per 100g fresh weight. That's ten to 25 times more than other apples. Anthocyanin is a colorant found mainly in red or blue fruit and vegetables. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidizing properties. Visit www.redlove-apple.be for recipes.
