Bhutan: Dagana aims to produce over 270 tons of tomatoes and onions

As a part of the economy contingency plan (ECP) programme in the district, aimed at meeting the domestic demand for onions and tomatoes in the country, the Dagana agriculture sector has identified more than 70 ha of land on which to grow these vegetables in the coming season.

District Agriculture Officer D.C. Bhandari said that poly houses were being installed for winter vegetable production: “We have been carrying out mass chilli cultivation for some time but now, we are planning to escalate tomato production in protected farms”

The ECP would also prioritise the production of winter chillis and cauliflower in ten gewogs. The sector has identified over 200-acres of land to grow chilli and cauliflower. The sector aims to produce about 172 tons of tomato, 108 tons of onion and about 192 tons of chilli this season.

Kuenselonline.com reports that, last year, the district produced about 950 tons of winter vegetables.
