Chinese garlic farms enter peak period, but price remains stable

The overall surface area devoted to garlic plantation in China expanded by 20% in 2020. And the production volume per hectare increased by nearly 10%. Furthermore, the product quality is better than last year. The abundant supply volume keeps the price low, which in turn stimulates garlic export. Mr. Du Jiayi, spokesperson for Jinxiang County Hefulong Food Import and Export Co., Ltd., recently talked about current conditions in the Chinese garlic export industry.

Production areas are currently entering the busiest season of the year. Labor is scarce and the labor fee continuously rises. The peak period of this agricultural season lasts around 20 days. "The shortage of labor means that smaller packages of garlic are difficult to process. We recently focused our attention on orders for larger volumes, in particular from clients in Brazil, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia." This is according to manager Du.

"The garlic we currently ship to overseas markets mainly comes from refrigerated warehouses. The domestic market is quite the opposite. We mainly supply garlic from sources other than refrigerated warehouses to domestic clients. However, as the temperature declines and the season comes to an end, the domestic market gradually shifts to garlic from refrigerated warehouses as well."

Looking back on the garlic market this year, the export volume of garlic expanded by more than 30% in the first seven months of 2020. The overall export volume was around 1.25 million tons. The period between May and July was particularly active because the Covid-19 outbreak in China was largely brought under control and new garlic entered the market. The overall export volume increased by 38% in that period. According to manager Du, the main reasons for the growing garlic export were an abundant harvest, a low price, and great product quality. The low price attracted much attention from overseas markets, in particular garlic importers from South America nearly doubled their order volume. And garlic importers in Indonesia ordered nearly half their entire annual quota in the period between May and July.

Jinxiang County Hefulong Food Import and Export has an annual export volume of 3,000 shipping containers. Some of the company products are certified with Global GAP, BRC, SEDEX, and SMETA.
