The melon and watermelon campaign in Castile-La Mancha will come to a close in early October with very positive results. 200,000 tons of melon and 180,000 tons of watermelon are expected to be produced, and despite the health crisis, prices have so far shown an upward trend. They have been 30% higher than in other years and amounted to over 40 cents per kilo.
Importance of exports
The melons and watermelons from the Spanish region of Castile-La Mancha are clearly export-oriented products. In the case of watermelons, an average of 67% of the production has been exported in the last five seasons, with a sharp increase in the latest one. As for melons, this share stands at around 60% on average.
98% of these exports go to the EU market, with a growing trend in recent years in the case of watermelons and stability in that of melons.
