On Monday, the Dutch wholesaler, De Groot van Dommele received its first load of Spanish mandarins. "There was an immediate, good demand. We sold that first load within a day. Things are going so well, we're trying to get more this week," says John van der Zouwen.
"We sell the Satsuma (Iwasaki) mandarins under the Jugosas label. We've been carrying this brand for several years now. You could debate flavor, but I was surprised by the flavor of these first Spanish mandarins. These are, of course, an early variety. But, they have a 10+ Brix level. So, they're delicious. They're priced slightly higher than last year."
John expects the supply to gradually increase in the coming weeks. "It's not large yet. But, fortunately, there are still enough South African mandarins available. So, we can fully meet demand. Clients are, however, ready for other products. September is a change-over month regarding production. Summer fruit like soft and stone fruit, are out of the range. They're making way for winter products. But the weather doesn't always play along," John concludes.
