Chinese Huaniu apples hit the market with higher prices

Apple categories available in China are roughly divided into Fuji, Red Delicious, and common apples, with Fuji being the most well-known variety followed by Red Delicious. These two varieties were both introduced from overseas, but in fact, there is a variety native to China that is not at all inferior to them whether in appearance or in taste - the Huaniu, a specialty of Gansu Province.

In recent years, with increasing popularity, Huaniu apples have been exported and are very popular with overseas customers. The good quality of these apples is a result of the unique geographical and climatic environment of Gansu - a mild climate with plenty of sunshine and rain that constitutes the right level of humidity and dryness. In addition, it is not very cold in winter or hot in summer, making it highly suitable for the growth of apples.

"The new crop hit the market recently. Generally speaking, the quality is very good. Although extreme weather conditions have occurred frequently this year, Gansu has not been greatly affected. The production has in general not fallen and prices are higher than the same period in previous years,” said Liu Wenpo, chairman of the Beijing Runfuyuan Trading Co., Ltd.

“All the products that we source are of premium quality. All are large in sizes, such as 75# and 80#, and prices are above 3.5 yuan per half a kilo with the best grade reaching 4 yuan. We currently target the mid-end market and market our products under the Runfuyuan brand through traditional sales channels to mainly fruit traders and supermarkets.”
