Japanese retail giant AEON’s first fresh-food convenience store, located in South Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou City, officially opened on August 20. This is the first time AEON has ventured into the "fresh food + convenience store" model in mainland China.
AEON already operates the convenience store brand “Ministop" and the fresh food supermarket brand "MaxValu" in China. Slogans and banners such as "Good-quality vegetables are not left overnight" and "Good-quality meat are not left overnight" can be seen across the new store, focusing the message on freshness and convenience. The food area in the store follows the style of Japanese convenience stores.
AEON is a comprehensive retail enterprise group with three headquarters in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. In 1985, the group entered Hong Kong, made investments, expanded its business to Guangzhou and entered the mainland China market in 1996; mainly operating shopping malls and general retail outlets (department stores, supermarkets, and food supermarkets). It has also been engaged in speciality stores, financial services, property services, convenience stores, and other businesses.
Apart from opening two new stores, AEON will also trial the business model of small supermarkets in the second half of this year. It is reported that the “small supermarkets” mentioned are its new AEON Fresh Convenience Stores. Cautiously entering the realm of fresh food convenience for the first time, AEON has great hopes for its new stores.
According to AEON, this new store will continue to explore in its operations. In 2021, more stores will be opened based on the conditions in business districts. The first stores will concentrate in the downtown area of Guangzhou. Based on a successful experience, the group hopes to expand its stores to other regions and cities.
