Sirmaur is the southernmost district of Himachal Pradesh, northern India. The district’s garlic crop has been identified under the Centrally sponsored ‘One District, One Product’ scheme, which promotes micro small and medium sector enterprises (MSMEs).
The largest production of garlic is going on in the Sangrah and Paonta Sahib blocks, although it is grown in other areas also. At least 3,734 hectares are under garlic production and 57,205 tonnes of crop was produced in the district in 2019-2020.
Tribuneindia.com quoted Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur, R.K. Pruthi as saying that a steep rise had been registered in its production owing to its high return. It was grown over 1,960 hectare in 2017-18 and 2,020 hectare in 2018-19. The production had increased from 30,020 tonnes in 2017-18 to 30,939 tonnes in 2018-19.
