The pineapple harvest and their commercialization in the local market have already begun in the Paraguayan district of Guayaibi, in the department of San Pedro. This region has about 600 hectares devoted to pineapple production, which are expected to produce nearly 900,000 boxes this season.
A box of 18 large pineapples currently costs 50,000 Guaranies and a box of 24 small fruits costs G. 30,000. The main point of sale is the Asunción Supply Market, but they are also being delivered to some supermarkets in various parts of Paraguay, according to producers.
Nestor Caceres, a pineapple producer from Calle San Francisco, said that the harvested fruits had excellent quality and the unique sweetness that characterizes local production. He also said that the volume of pineapples being marketed would soon increase.
