Rick van de Ven, ZON:

"Price of iceberg lettuce on the rise after difficult months"

The sale of Dutch iceberg lettuce has been quite difficult in recent months, but has now found its way up again. "It wasn't that we weren't able to sell it, but the prices were simply at a very low level. Now the supply is lower and there is also a bit more demand," says product manager Rick van de Ven of ZON.

“Prices are now at a level of around 4.50 - 5 Euro (10 in a box). But we are moving from a price level around 2.50 Euro.” Fortunately, the lighter weights are currently popular among customers. The weather is changing now and the days are getting shorter, so the iceberg lettuce isn't growing as quickly. Moreover, everyone is back from holiday and the necessary offers are planned again, so I expect the prices to go up a bit," says Rick.

In addition to the domestic market, ZON also exports the necessary iceberg lettuce. "England and Scandinavia are good buyers for iceberg lettuce. Germany is largely self-sufficient," says the product manager. The volume of iceberg lettuce has been stable at ZON in recent years. "We have a larger grower who mainly supplies them for the programmes and a smaller grower who sells them at the auction."
