The lettuces from the vertical garden of the Emirati start-up Smart Acres are almost ready to be sent to the different international markets.
The vegetables are grown in containers under led light in a hydroponic regime, a system that allows the vegetables to grow without using soil throughout the process. According to the company, the 237 m² complex can produce up to 900 kilos of lettuce per month.
In the future, Smart Acres plans to grow potatoes and berries. They will also continue to improve the quality of the lettuce they produce. It is surprising that all this is achieved without the need for land and in the middle of a desert area.
The project also seeks to help the Government of the United Arab Emirates achieve food security throughout its territory, since the country imports 80 to 90% of the food it consumes.
