Veracruz becomes Mexico's leading grapefruit producer

The state of Veracruz has positioned itself as Mexico's leading grapefruit producer after producing 266,282 tons of this fruit per season in more than 8,000 hectares of cultivation, stated the Secretariat for Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (SEDARPA).

According to the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), the municipalities with the highest performance are Martinez de la Torre, Paso de Ovejas, Cazones, Alamo Temapache, and Papantla, which account for more than 65% of the total.

SEDARPA supports the state's citrus producers by working on phytosanitary epidemiological management in the Nautla and Totonaca regions, in order to combat pests and diseases. SEDARPA is delivering Imidacloprid, an environmentally friendly insecticide, to 5,255 farmers from the municipalities of Martinez de la Torre, Tlapacoyan, Atzalan, Misantla, San Rafael, Tecolutla, Gutierrez Zamora, and Espinal so they can treat 32,824 hectares to mitigate the presence of Diaphorina citri, the transmitting insect of the HLB or yellow dragon.
